Why?

A question that often floats through my mind...

Why do people always feel the need to "one up" another person?

I find this most evident when a group of women get together.  Someone is always smarter, prettier, richer, less fortunate, happier, sadder, etc...

Sometimes you can simply say, "I'm tired." and that can snowball into "Well I am tired because ______."

We are all guilty of this.  Just over the weekend, we were out for a friend's birthday.  All of us ladies were dancing and having fun.  We went to the restroom and one of the other women started talking about her plans for the following day and I say the following...

"I have to go to Toledo for a baby shower and a funeral."

Our other friend burst out laughing and called me out on it.  She told me I pulled a Kristen Wiig from SNL.  We all laughed and my "one up" was unintentional.   Got to love a friend who is honest enough to tell you.

72 months of Brendan

Brendan.  My highly energetic, never sits down, dramatic boy.  How did you get to be 6?  Yesterday we brought you home from the hospital.  I'm sure of it.  All 4lbs of teeny tiny baby.
March 1, 2006 (home after 31 days)
We are lucky because we got extra time with you...10 extra weeks to be precise.  You decided that January 30th (which is also your great grandma's birthday) was the perfect day to be born.  Why be born in April?  What happened in April that year?  Who knows.  You wanted to be here when the Superbowl was in town (which took place a few days after your were born) and when it was cold and snowy.  You were simply to impatient to wait.  We were told to expect a baby that was most likely not breathing on his own to be whisked away to the NICU. Ha!  You came out with your eyes wide open and crying as loud as your little lungs would let you.  Our perfect preemie.

Now 6 years later you are in kindergarten.  You get on a bus each morning and go to your school a mile away.  You are learning and growing right before my eyes.  You come home and tell me about lunch and recess (your favorite parts of school) and are eager to do your homework (we shall see how long this lasts for!).

You love any and all sports.  You love the Detroit Tigers, Pistons, and Lions.  You love the University of Michigan and tell me often how much you do not like the Buckeyes.  You would play sports all day if you could because your feet are never still.  You need to be moving, running, jumping, or playing.

You love nature, being outside, and birds.  We saw a bald eagle at Grandma's house last May and ever since then you have wanted to know more about birds.  We spent a lot of the summer visiting different nature centers and kept track of all the new birds we found.  You can identify many birds by sight and some by just their call.  Your favorites are blue jays, bald eagles, wood ducks, geese, great egrets and robins.

You love reading, numbers, games, and Wii.  We often play Bingo, Yahtzee, and have Wii competitions.  You love to win and we have to catch you sometimes because you can get pretty sneaky!

You told me tonight your favorite part of being 5 was going to school.  I know some of your other favorites are playing with daddy, Lila, soccer, milk, Kung Fu Panda, sports, pens, and snuggling with mommy.

I'm excited to see who you are at 6.  Each year you seem to have something you LOVE and I'm curious to see what being 6 will bring.  Thank you Brendan for making us crazy and filling our home with so much (loud) love.

Happy Birthday Brendan!

We love you

No girlfriends at school

"Teacher said we are not allowed to have boyfriends and girlfriends at school.  Just friends."

This is what my almost 6 year old tells me tonight after I tucked him in.  He also told me about two little girls, K and S, who chase him around the playground.  They try to kiss him but he said he runs faster and they didn't get him.  He told me S caught him and hugged him twice.

He giggled the whole time.

I am NOT ready for this...it is only kindergarten.

24 months of Lila

Oh my sweet and lovable Lila.  Where have the past 2 years gone?  It really does seem like just yesterday we brought you home (cliche I know) all big (to us!), healthy, and full-term.

You stole the hearts of so many.  Especially your daddy (who will swear up and down that he isn't wrapped around your tiny little finger).

You make people smile and laugh.  This is such a great trait and I hope you continue to do so throughout your life.  You say funny things, like to play babies, dance, eat, and watch shows.  You are independent, patient, loving, thoughtful, and silly.

You are on the go.  A little tornado in the house.  Your toys are always all over the place while you are taking your babies for a walk, feeding them, or putting them to sleep.  I love listening to your little conversations and when you want me to join you say "On mommy! On mommy!" (come on mommy)

You have to sleep with two pillow pets, three blankets, and countless babies.  Sometimes I sneak in to look at you and you'll have your babies covered up next to you.  Such a little mommy.

You love Dora the Explorer, Team Umizoomi, Super Why, babies, dogs, cats, ducks, geese, yogurt, snacks, "Jew-ee"(princesses), games, phones, Brendan, and of course "Dee" (your most favorite thing!)

You are very dramatic and love to put on a show.  Temper tantrums are hilarious (to us) and you have to sit in time out sometimes.  You will walk up to us and say "Hit daddy" and hit him or "Hit mommy" and hit me.  This earns you a spot in time out.  You always say "Sor-ee momma" and give us a hug.

We are so happy that you are you.  We love you Lila!  Happy 2nd Birthday!

One and done birthday party

How did we get so lucky to have just enough snow for a sledding party in a winter that has been mild and practically snow free???  I almost didn't believe it was going to happen.  We've had only a few inches and it is the end of January and now tonight (one day after the party) we are supposed to get rain/thunderstorms?  In January?

God blessed us with a beautiful day for the party!  Sunshine, blue skies, crisp temperatures, and about 3 inches of snow.  A sledding party is a perfect compromise for combining a boy/girl party.  We came up with a few other ideas in case the weather wouldn't cooperate (bird feeder craft, snowman bowling, and balloons) and had pizza, snacks, and cake.  They honestly had fun just running around the lodge and playing with the balloons.  Dollar store balloons and 10 kids were happy!

 Craft table with coloring
Bird feeder project (toilet paper rolls, peanut butter, and bird seed)
 Balloons

Pinterest find.  Use pictures to create a collage of their age.

Lila being dramatic. (She was waiting for her aunt and began to cry)
 Making bird feeders
Their half/half cake...University of Michigan and Dora the Explorer!
 Getting ready for sledding

The moms race
My nephew (3) and Lila wanted to go down together.
Their sled flipped and they both got a face full of snow...Lila said, "Done!"

Once we cleaned up and got back home, we were relieved that we had another successful birthday party and we didn't have to plan another one for a year!  One and done!  Not much to plan since it will be another sledding party:)

Brendan is already planning his future birthdays.  He said he wants a duck cake for his 7th birthday and a Lions cake for his 15th birthday.  His words...not mine.

Week 3 {365 project}

Here are my week 3 pictures...

January 16
Brendan jumped two reading levels at school since his conferences mid-November.

January 17
Lila sitting with her babies in her stroller.

January 18
Where's Brendan???

January 19
My little helper.  I couldn't find her gloves so she wore a pair of mine.

January 20
"Meow prints"
We have a few stray cats (in our neighborhood) so I took this for the kids.  They think the cats are our pets that we let stay outside and enjoy seeing their tracks.

January 21
Her face cracks me up!  She cannot wait to blow out her candles!

We were blessed with a few inches of snow right before the party and luckily it was enough for sledding!

(I picked two pictures for Saturday because it was our kids birthday party.)
