Bedtime conversations with Brendan

Last night while Brendan was brushing his teeth, I told him we had to pray for a very special little baby.  One of my childhood friends has been posting prayer requests on facebook for her best friend's baby.  This little guy was born very early and has had many complications.  She posts specific requests for everyone to pray for and everyone is hoping for a miracle.

When Brendan asked why we had to pray for him, I told him that he was very sick and some of his organs were not working right and they really needed him to pee.  He snickered a little because he is a little boy who loves talking about all things bathroom related and then he went on to say his nightly prayer,

"Dear God.  Thank you for mommy, daddy, Lila, and baby H.  Please let him go potty. Amen"

I told him that God can always hear his special prayers and is always listening.  That if we know someone who is sick or sad that we can always say a little prayer and God will hear us.  He started to ask some questions.

"How can God hear us?"

"Where is God?"

"When did God die?"

I tried my best to explain that God lives in our hearts and he is always with us because he loves us so much.  We can talk to God out loud or we can talk to God in our heads and he will always hear us.  That God has always been here and created everything we see and touch.  He got very serious and in his most innocent voice says,

"God made me?  How did he make me?"

I stopped for a second to think this over.  How do you explain this to a 5 year old without explaining it so much he goes to school the next day and exclaims he knows how babies are born.  In simple words I said that mommy and daddy love each other so God decided that he would give us Brendan and he grew inside of me until he was born.

A big smile stretched across his face and he gave me a hug.  As I walked out of his room I could not believe this serious talk I had just had with my "little" boy.  Wow.  Wasn't he just the baby that was in the NICU and we were praying to get strong so he could come home?

*Baby H has been peeing more!*

  1. Children's prayers are the best. They are so simple, but they hold the most power. I love the conversation you two had. :-) Praying for Baby H!
